Our Teachers

Music Together®, now being taught worldwide, began as an educational project of the Center for Music and Young Children, founded in 1985. All our faculty members are registered to teach Music Together, by the CMYC early childhood music-training program and receive ongoing training, supervision, and peer support.

Jennifer Bartel

Certification Level I, M.M. in Flute, Manhattan School of Music; B.M., DePaul University. Ms. Bartel is the recipient of many awards including: winner of Union League Civic and Arts Foundation Competition; first place winner in the Society of American Musicians Young Artist Competition; winner of the University of Chicago Concerto Competition. She was a guest artist on the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series at the Chicago Cultural Center which was broadcast live on WFMT. Jennifer has performed with the Elgin, Rockford, and Kenosha Symphony Orchestras. She is on faculty as the flute instructor at the Lake Forest Symphony Music School.
Shannon Budd

Certification Level I,M.M. in Flute Performance from the University of Akron, B.M. in Flute Performance, Cum Laude, from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. She has taught flute privately for the past six years.
Heidi Cohen

B.A. in Music from University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, M.A.T. from National-Louis in Evanston. She has been teaching piano privately for the last five years on the North Shore. Over the last couple of years she has enjoyed performing in numerous New Music Concerts and Children Shows in the Chicagoland area.
Lisa Griffith

Director, Certification Level II. Music Together Teacher, M.M., Northwestern University Opera Performance: B.A. in Music, Knox College, Apprentice Artist Glimmer Glass Opera, New York, Apprentice Artist Program for Singers, Santa Fe Opera, member of NATS-National Association of Teachers of Singing, Lisa is the Director for Music Together at Lake Forest and their satellite location, Oak Brook, and Elmhurst.
Dorothy-Jean Lloyd

Certification Level I. Music Together Teacher. B.M., University of British Columbia, M.M. Juilliard School of Music, DMA, UCLA in opera direction and production. She has sung with leading orchestras and opera companies in Canada and France, where she was an apprentice at the Paris Opera for two seasons. Currently, she is pursuing her work in the field of vocal instruction, vocal workshops, stage direction and production. Dorothy also teaches “Growing with Music”, a class for four to six year olds at the Music School.
Kristine Shlain

Certification Level I. Music Together Teacher. B.A. in Music, confirming qualifications of music teacher and choir conducting, Jazeps Vitols Academy of Music, Riga, Latvia; Diploma from Riga Pedagogical Specialized School, Latvia. She has performed in the female choir “Dzintars” and toured many countries in Europe for concerts. Kristine was a Conductor Apprentice of the Children’s Choir in Latvia. For several years, Kristine was also a music teacher for children grades K-12 in Riga, Latvia. Kristine moved to the U.S. in 1998, and since then has been involved in family childcare in the Chicagoland area. For the past two years, she has been teaching private piano lessons on the North Shore.

Mark Adamczyk

B.A. in Theatre from the University of Illinois. Mark has been actively involved with children andmusic since he was registered to teach Music Together in 1999. To date, he has enjoyed the company of over 600 children and their families in Music Together classes. Mark is music instructor at the Montessori School of Lake Forest and performs at family events for area park districts and the Lake County Forest Preserves. Mark teaches guiter and is a composer of stage musicals, for both children and adults, at the nationally famous Theatre Building Chicago Writers Workshop.
Sue Becker

B.S. in Clinical Laboratory Science from University of Illinois at Chicago specializing in Microbiology, first taught Music Together at Bethany Early Childhood Learning Center and has volunteered at Family Network parent-child drop-in center in Highland Park. Sue has a life long love of music making and a background in theatrical production, choral and madrigal singing. She has been a Music Together mom for many years.
